Alkaline Water and our body’s pH regulation

One of the most common reasons we see offered by those who discount the benefits of alkaline water is something like this,

“under normaexpertl circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid.”

That quote was taken from Dr. Roach, a doctor with a syndicated column in many newspapers and newsletter across the country.  Kind of like the Dear Abby for health.  Scroll down to the bottom of his column from the St. … Read the rest

Want alkaline water? Just use baking soda…

To the alkaline water salesperson, that statement causes all sorts of reactions.  Frustration, eye rolls, unbelief, etc.  Typically it is countered with an answer like these.Arm_&_Hammer_Brand_Soda_poster_ca._1900

“Too much baking soda isn’t good for you”

“there are side effects with too much baking soda, like gas and diarrhea”

“that’s not alkaline, see, my pH meter (or drops) doesn’t show pH increasing”

The first 2 are accurate, but a little misleading, the 3rd is just dumb.  All illustrate a fundamental misunderstanding of … Read the rest

Don’t equate food with water

juices_01Equating alkaline water with an alkaline diet is probably the biggest misconception within the alkaline world.  It stems from the fundamental misunderstanding of differences between pH and alkalinity.  We’re told drinking alkaline water is like eating a big kale salad.

But it’s not.

Our bodies need both hydrogen (pH) AND minerals (alkalinity).  Hydrogen for things like cellular fuel and antioxidant protection, but alkaline minerals to cancel out and balance acid waste buildup.  We can’t expect a glass of water with … Read the rest

pH and Alkalinity are not the same

ph_test_paperFor anyone looking at alkaline water, the title of this post might seem a bit conflicted.  We all know the most advertised and marketed aspect of alkaline water is the pH number.  The first thing new distributors at Enagic or MLM brand X learn how to do is put some pH reagent drops in the water and show how purple = alkaline.  From their conclusions are drawn as to how this water can change the alkaline levels in our bodies … Read the rest

My Dad is stronger than your Dad

A common problem across the health and nutrition industry is that it’s very hard figuring out who to believe. Diets, workouts, is this food good or bad, contradictory studies and research, etc. Early in our alkaline water days we spent a lot of time over 2 years meticulously going through the research and talking to anyone we could to figure out the “real” answer.

What we found was the exact opposite. Researchers with multiple PhDs who had spent their entire … Read the rest

Don’t be a scrounger

Bang-head-hereSometimes when you are so used to seeing the same thing over and over, even a little variety can catch your eye.  One of the tired old responses or arguments we continually see from the anti-alkaline water crowd is along the lines of this.

“Our body will always maintain it’s pH”

What they forget to add, or purposely gloss over is how the body maintains it.  In order for the pH to stay constant, especially the blood’s pH, the body … Read the rest

Testing, only as good as…

What if we gauged marathoners by how well they ran a 100 meter race? Would that to be a sound predictor for how they would perform over 26 miles? How about a marriage based on the first date? Or what if a movie was given awards based on the first and last 10 minutes only?  Nothing in between was viewed.

Would anyone who suggested these ideas be given any credence?

No. But somehow it works when selling water filters.

Milk – Does it do a body good?

Late last year, a study came out drawing conclusions on some of the health benefits typically associated with drinking milk.  Things we constantly hear like “builds strong bones and teeth”.Gotmilk

This wasn’t just a small scale study either.  The average length of observation was just over 20 years and more than 105,000 Swedes participated.  You can read the entire abstract, methods and conclusions here.

Or in the sake of time…a few highlights from the study.

Keep it between the white lines

After 4 years in this natural alkaline water world and a few years before that with electric ionizers, we’ve lost track of the number of times we’re asked, “will this fix (fill in the blank symptom)?Flat_Road

Our standard answer has always been a form of “we don’t know”.

Not because we haven’t had tons of people with nite and day improvements or because we don’t think the water can help, but because there are countless variables that contribute to our … Read the rest

Are You Magnesium Deficient?

An important read for those serious about their health as magnesium often gets overlooked, so much that it has been dubbed the “invisible deficiency”.

“Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in your body. It affects everything from your heartbeat to your muscles to your hormones,” says Dr. Danine Fruge, Associate Medical Director at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, Florida.

Fortunately, if you’re drinking lots of Vitev water, you’re already on the right track as it’s one of … Read the rest
